Idiyapam with Kadala Curry(String Hoppers with Peanut Curry) by Gokila

Idiyappam', or string hoppers is a traditional Tamil, Kerala, and Sri Lankan food consisting of rice flour pressed into noodle form and then steamed, also known as Noolputtu in Kodava language.Thanks to gokila lakshmi, one of my good friend from school days. Its her recipe.

Serving Suggestion: My Friend has made Kadala Curry. .It goes with any NV curry too 

Kadala  Curry
Ingredients
  1. Chick pea-1 cup
  2. Shallots –Handful
  3. Dry red chilly- 2
  4. Grated cocounut -1/2 cup
  5. Coriander seed-1 tsp
  6. Cinnamon –small piece
  7. Cocount oil or sunflower oil -2 tspn
  8. Mustard seeds-1/2 tspn
  9. Cloves-2
  10. Curry leaves -1 strip
  11. Salt-to taste

Preparation

To roast and grind:

Grated coconut-1/2 cup

Shallots –handful

Coriander -1 tspn

Dry red chilly-2

Cinnamon –small piece

Cloves-2

  • Roast the above mentioned items in low flame (First roast coriander for 1 min and keep it aside and other ingredients can be roasted separately).Grind with little amount of water with all the roasted ingredient.
  • Soak chickpea overnight and pressure cook with water for 3-4 whistles. Keep it aside.
  • Put 2 tspn of oil in pan or tava and add mustard seeds,curry leaves in low flame
  • Add grinded paste and salt to taste.
  • Mix well .(If u want to add some more water ,you can add upto 1/2  glass of water)
  • Sauté for 3 min and add cooked chick pea (drain water in chick pea)
  • Once the curry is thick, oil starts separating switch off the flame.
  • Serve with Idiyappam,chappathi,naan and other rotis.

Idiyappam

Ingredients

  1. Raw rice flour-2 cups (flour is available in market )
  2. Salt – to taste
  3. Water –1 glass(to make dough)

Preparation

Take thick bottom vessel and roast the flour for 1/2min (Note : do not add water to flour. If u roast  more than ½ min it will turn black at bottom in pan)

Spread the flour in a plate to get cool.

Put the flour in a vessel to make dough (if u want coconut in dough you can add)

Take small amount of dough in idiyappam press and press into idly mould and place it in idly cooker .

Cook for 15 min

Serve hot with kadala curry or coconut milk.
